About the Barbet

HISTORY
The Barbet is  one of the original water dogs dating back to the 14th century.  The breed was primarily used to hunt water fowl in France and developed to use in various other jobs.  It is thought to be the foundation for many other water dog and retriever breeds such as the Newfoundland, Briard, Otterhound and Poodle.
Like many European treasures the Barbet population was devastated by the two World Wars and was on the brink of extinction.  It was through the efforts of a few dedicated breeders that the Barbet survives today.

Today the Barbet has found a devoted following that enjoys its intelligence and athletic abilities. It is an ideal sporting dog - excelling in Agility, Coursing, Dock Diving and Field competitions.
The Barbet is a rare breed with less than 600 in the United States. That number is growing as the dedicated breeders of today strive to produce healthy, dogs with the qualities we value in a Barbet.
